Lateritic soils of the Cerrado are highly weathered, generally acidic and characterized by inherent low soil nutrients and thus reduced fertility. Thus, they require the use of large amounts of amendments and fertilizers. The high cost and high dependence on imported fertilizers requires alternative sources of nutrients and soil conditioners research. Moreover, sugar cane has high requirement in Si, which can be limited in these soils. The addition of pyrometallurgical slags could be an alternative source of nutrients and as soil acidity corrective. However, the use of this industrial by-product requires the preliminary characterization of the physic-chemical stability of the metal-bearing phases they contain, in order to make sure that their storage on production site or their agricultural spreading do not present considerable environmental risk. This WP will be coordinated by UNB, and experiments will be conducted at the UNB farm at the field scale and inside culture rooms of the Geoscience Institute
